| 释义 | 割禮 1. An operation that involves cutting away part or all of the foreskin of the penis. This operation is often performed as a traditional rite which is generally associated with people of the Jewish faith but is also employed in Muslim and Christian circles. When performed as a rite it is usually done either before or at puberty. In the case of Jewish babies, it is traditionally performed on the eighth day after birth. 2. In relation to females, a ritual surgical procedure that may range from the drawing of blood to infibulation (removal of the clitoris, the labia minora and the anterior two thirds of the labia majora, the sides of which are joined leaving a small posterior opening). Although not specifically prohibited, circumcision of female children would generally constitute an unlawful assault. Also known as ‘clitoridectomy’ or ‘excision’.
