A motor vehicle used to provide a public passenger service and which is fitted with a taxi meter. It means a motor vehicle which is registered as a taxi under the Road Traffic Ordinance: Road Traffic Ordinance (Cap 374) s 2. Every taxi must be fitted with a taximeter of a design and construction approved by the Commissioner for Transport, which permission may specify the position and manner in which a taximeter may be fitted to a taxi: Road Traffic (Construction and Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations (Cap 374A) reg 41(1), (3). Every taxi must have fitted to its roof an illuminated sign, of a type approved by the Commissioner for Transport, which at all times during the hours of darkness when the taxi is available for hire displays the word ‘TAXI’ so that it is clearly visible from the front and rear of the vehicle: reg 45(a).
