The writing of the words ‘and company’, or any abbreviation thereof, between two parallel transverse lines across the front of a cheque, with or without the words ‘not negotiable’, or the drawing of two parallel transverse lines with or without the words ‘not negotiable’: Bills of Exchange Ordinance (Cap 19) s 76(1). Crossing instructs the drawee bank not to pay the cheque otherwise than to the bank. Crossing does not affect the ability to transfer a cheque and each transferee took it subject to defects in the title of all previous parties: Sum Wing Credits Ltd v Shun Yip Textiles Ltd [1988] HKC 405 (HC).
