The civil law concept that the signature of a stranger to a bill of exchange creates a liability on the bill to the stranger, coexistent with the liability of the party for whom the aval has been given. An indorsement on a bill guaranteeing payment of it: Mercedes-Benz AG v Leiduck [1995] 3 HKC 1 (PC).
