Deposit receipt |
An advice issued by a bank to its customer stating that a deposit of a certain amount was made at the bank for an agreed period and at a specific rate of interest. If such a deposit is to be renewed automatically until further instruction, the bank issues an ‘advice of deposit’ to its customer. The terms of the time deposit will govern if the customer wishes to withdraw without waiting for the expiry of the notice period. Although the customer does not necessarily have the right to break the deposit contract, nearly all banks in Hong Kong allow their customers to withdraw before the deposit maturity date provided the deposit is not substantially high and the deposit interest is totally forfeited. However, in the Asian financial crisis in 1997 some banks did not allow their depositors to withdraw the deposit before it matured. See also Bank. |
