Permission for a party to legal proceedings to take longer time to perform some action than would otherwise be allowed under the relevant court rules, orders or judgment. The court may, on such terms as it thinks fit and just, by order extend or abridge the period within which a person is required or authorised by court rules, judgment, order or direction, to do any act in any proceedings: The Rules of the High Court (Cap 4A) O 3 r 5. The court has wide discretion to allow an extension of time where it is necessary to avoid an injustice: Schafer v Blyth [1920] 3 KB 140. Time will be extended where there is no prejudice to other parties or where the prejudice caused by the delay can be compensated by appropriate orders for costs.
