Questions directed at a witness should be asked through the trial judge so that the admissibility of the question can be ruled upon: R v Lenton (1919) 14 Cr App Rep 105. Questions to the trial judge should be read out in open court: R v Gorman [1987] 2 All ER 435, 85 Cr App Rep 121 (CCA).
