In tort law, a person so closely and directly affected by the acts and omissions of another, that the other person ought reasonably to contemplate the first person being so affected when directing his or her mind to the acts or omissions called into question: Donoghue v Stevenson [1932] AC 562. First formulated by Lord Atkin, the ‘neighbour principle’ describes those to whom one owes a duty of care. See also Duty of care; Foresight of consequences; Negligence; Occupier’s liability.
