Any ship, cargo or other object which is abandoned at sea by the master and crew without any intention of returning to it and without any hope on their part of recovering it: The Aquila (1798) 1 Ch Rob 37, 165 ER 87. A vessel which was derelict did not cease to be derelict merely because it sank and was lying on the sea bed outside territorial waters: Pierce v Bemis, The Lusitania [1986] QB 401, 1 All ER 1011, 1 Lloyd’s Rep 132.
