Stock split |
An increase in the number of shares in a given share capital stock without changing the total dollar value of the stock. A stock split has the effect of decreasing the par value of the shares and is accomplished by replacing one old share with a certain number of new shares. For instance, in a 4-for-1 split, each shareholder will receive four new share for each share presently held. Stock splits usually indicate the good performance of a share price, however the total value of the company’s market capitalisation has not changed in result of the split. See also Par value; Share capital. |
