| 释义 | 堂 In Chinese customary law, an ancient Chinese institution in rural society for holding ancestral land, so land derived from a common ancestor can be enjoyed by his male descendants for their lifetime and so from generation to generation indefinitely: Tang Kai Chung & Anor v Tang Chik Shang & Ors [1970] HKLR 276. Tong might use the family’s lucky name or any other name, something ended with the Chinese character ‘yuen’. There are four types of tongs (1) a business tong between members without hereditary link or common relationship; (2) a business tong between clansmen; (3) a religious tong; and (4) a family tong. Tongs usually built ancestral halls to house the ancestral tablets: Tang Yau Yi Tong & Anor v Tang Mou Shau Tso & Ors [1995] 2 HKC 245.
