An expert specially qualified in the subject matter of the case who is appointed to assist and advise the court on the technical issues. In any civil proceedings, the court may call not more than two assessors and may dispose of such proceedings, wholly or in part, with the aid of such assessor or assessors, but the decision of the judge shall be the decision of the Court: High Court Ordinance (Cap 4) s 53; The Rules of the High Court (Cap 4A) O 33 rr 2(c), 6; District Court Ordinance (Cap 336) s 58; Lands Tribunal Ordinance (Cap 17) s 10. The judge is not bound to follow the assessor’s advice: The Beryl (1884) 9 PD 137 (CA). For assessors in other proceedings: Merchant Shipping (Safety) Ordinance (Cap 369) s 68(5); Medical Registration Ordinance (Cap 161) s 21B; Inland Revenue Ordinance (Cap 112) s 2.
