Deed poll |
A deed that is made by and expresses the intention of one party or is made by two or more persons expressing a common intention. The name derives from the practice of ‘polling’ the deed (cutting an even edge) in order to contrast with the indenture, where the wavy edge indicated the existence of a counterpart deed. Deed polls are most commonly used to change a person’s name. As to the declaration of a person’s intention to change his surname by deed poll, the deed poll may be enrolled in the High Court when duly executed and attested: The Rules of the High Court (Cap 4A) O 63 r 10. See also Deed; Indenture. |
