Applicable to negotiable and non-negotiable instruments. A negotiable instrument can function as a substitute for money (a cheque) or as an extension of credit (a promissory note in which money is due and payable on some future date): Bills of Exchange Ordinance (Cap 19). Law related to commercial paper: the (US) Uniform Commercial Code art 3. The term is also used in a broader sense to embrace, inter alia, letters of credit, conditional sale agreements, hire purchase agreements, bills of sale, warehouse receipts, guarantees, stocks, bonds, debentures and other securities and essentially any document of title upon which credit may be raised.
