A coastal state whose economy depends on fisheries has preferential rights over other states fishing in waters adjacent to its own EFZ: Fisheries Jurisdiction cases (UK v Iceland) 1974 ICJ Rep 3. Rights and interests claimed by states in an EFZ are recognised by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982: United Nations Convention on the law of the Sea 1982 art 56.
