A public sale at which any type of real or personal property, including livestock, is sold, usually to the highest bidder. As to the manner of sale by auction: Sale of Goods Ordinance (Cap 26) s 60. ‘Dutch auction’, in which the auctioneer states a sum and proceeds in decreasing amounts until a bid is made and the first bidder becoming the purchaser, is within the concept of an auction: Demerara Turf Club Ltd (In Liquidation) v Wight [1918] AC 605 (PC).
