Abbr – ILO. A body founded to create an international code of labour law and practice. Originally formed part of the League of Nations system, and its constitution was contained in the Treaty of Versailles. The ILO was created under the Treaty of Peace between the Allied Powers and Associated Powers and Germany 1919, becoming a United Nations specialised agency in 1946. The principal aim of the ILO is to improve the conditions of labour, which is to be achieved by, for example, the regulation of hours of work, regulation of the labour supply and prevention of unemployment, protection of the worker against sickness and industrial injury, recognition of the principle of equal remuneration for work of equal value and of the principle of freedom association, and the organisation of vocational and technical education. The Hong Kong SAR, is not an independent member of the International Labour Organisation, however, the People’s Republic of China is. See also United Nations.
