释义	手稿 An original document that contains either a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic piece of work, or combinations of these works, regardless of whether it is written by hand or not. ‘Author’s manuscript’ means the actual paper on which the composition is written, which is duly authorised by the author, not surreptitiously copied: Macmillan & Co v Dent [1906] 1 Ch 101. In other words, it is the paper with the words inscribed on it, and not the composition of the author independently of its inscription: Macmillan & Co v Dent, supra. The owner of an unpublished manuscript, although not the author of it, may acquire copyright in it by being the first to publish it: Walter v Lane [1899] 2 Ch 749, [1900] AC 539.
