1.An application made to a court or a judge to obtain a rule or order directing some act to be done. There are three types of motions: originating motions, motions in action and other special motions. Except for ex parte applications, no application by motion should be made without notice: The Rules of the High Court (Cap 4A) O 8 r 2(1). 2. A formal suggestion proposed in a meeting or by a legislative body that requires a vote. A motion may require a quorum before action can be taken. In the parliamentary law, a motion is the formal method by which a member submits a proposed measure or resolve for the consideration and action. A motion for the appointment of two or more persons as directors of a company may be made at a general meeting: Companies Ordinance (Cap 32) s 157A.
