Abbr – EEC. An economic union established by treaty in 1958 to assist the member nations in their compliance with the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1947. The EEC aimed at establishing a common market and approximating the economic policies of its member states: Treaty Establishing the European Economic Community 1957 art 2. The aims and objectives of the EEC were to achieve harmonious development of economic activities, continuous and balanced expansion, increased stability, increased standards of living, and closer relationships between member states. The original members (France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands) were subsequently joined by the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Portugal, and Spain. The term EEC changed on 1 November 1993 to the European Union: Treaty on European Union 1992 art G(A)(1). The Treaty on European Union 1992 also expanded and consolidated what were the EEC’s areas of competency. See also European Community; European Union.
