A bill of exchange drawn on a banker payable on demand: Bills of Exchange Ordinance (Cap 19) s 73(1). The bank will pay promptly providing there are sufficient funds in the account to cover the amount of the cheque and the amount does not exceed any agreed overdraft limit. If funds are not available, the cheque is dishonoured; it is said to ‘bounce’. Although cheques are negotiable instruments, they are primarily used as a means of settling trade and personal debts.
