Point of sale |
Abbr – POS The use of payment cards at a retail location (point of sale). The payment information is captured either by paper vouchers or by electronic terminal, which in some cases, are designed also to transmit the information. Where this is so, the arrangement may be referred to as ‘electronic funds transfer at the point of sale’ (EFTPOS). EFTPOS allows payment to be made for goods and services by the electronic transfer of funds from the customer’s account to the supplier’s account. In the case of a retail payment, instead of a customer paying for goods or services by means of cash or a cheque, he present the cashier with a plastic EFTPOS debit card, which has information relating to the customer’s bank account encoded on a magnetic strip on the back. The cashier ‘swipes’ the card through a card reader installed at the retailer’s point of sale terminal and enters the amount of transaction. Where the transaction exceeds a given amount the retailer’s terminal will seek authorisation from the authorisation centre of the customer’s bank to accept the card: Paget’s Law of Banking (11th Ed, Butterworths) p 281. |
