The member states of the bank participate on a share basis. Originally formed to avoid the financial chaos and depression of the war years, its focus now is to encourage economic growth in developing nations. The IBRD offers financial assistance for projects incapable of being financed otherwise, and provides experts in various fields for use by member states. Loans generally have a grace period of five years and are repayable in 20 years. Also known as ‘World Bank’.
