An intergovernmental organisation set up by the Statute of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law 1940 involving methods of harmonising and co-ordinating private law. Its major activities relate to aspects of international trade law and include initiating draft conventions for adoption in diplomatic conferences. Of particular note are its conventions relating to a uniform law on the international sale of goods, contracts for the international carriage of goods by road, international financial leasing and international factoring, and the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts. The UNIDROIT Governing Council is the supreme decision-making body, assisted by a study group and working group.
