释义 | 傳譯員 Translator arranged for arrested persons (when being interviewed), the accused in the trials or parties to civil proceedings including witnesses who are unable to communicate reasonably fluently in the official language(s). In civil cases, the use of interpreters by parties or witnesses is entirely a matter of discretion for the judge: Re Fuld (dec’d) Hurtley & Anor v Fuld & Ors (Fuld & Anor Intervening) [1965] 2 All ER 653, 1 WLR 1336. The Hong Kong Bill of Rights Ordinance (Cap 383) guarantees that a person charged with a criminal offence is entitled to have the free assistance of an interpreter if he cannot understand or speak the language used in the court: Hong Kong Bill of Rights Ordinance (Cap 383) s 8 art 11(2)(f).
