An amount allowed beyond what is strictly necessary.
Corporations - In futures trading and share purchasing, an amount of funds that must be deposited with the broker for each futures contract as a guarantee of fulfilment of the contract: Buckley Guide to World Commodity Markets – Physical, Futures and Options Trading (7th Ed, Kogan Page) p 603. When a trader initiates a futures position, an initial deposit must be made known as the ‘initial margin’. A call for additional funds is known as a ‘variation margin’. A margin requirement can be as low as 5% in the futures market, in contrast with 30-50% required for shares. See also Share.
