Originally, a technical legal term meaning personal property of a married women over which the husband’s executors or administrators could exercise no rights without the wife’s consent. Chattels that the wife actually used and those that matched her rank and position were considered her paraphernalia. Such paraphernalia would remain the property of the wife upon her husband’s death and could not pass to the husband’s executors: Masson, Templier & Co v De Fries [1910] 1 KB 535 (CA). This old common law rule is now made obsolete by the statute: Married Persons Status Ordinance (Cap 182) s 4.
