A life insurance policy which provides life-long coverage to the insured and the sum insured is only payable on the death of the person whose life is insured. The policy-owner is entitled to ‘cash value’, which is the interest in the funds accumulated in the reserve. The cash value is refunded from the insurer to the policy-owner upon his cancelling the policy and surrendering the policy to the insurer. In addition, the policy-owner in also entitled to a dividend. In case of whole life assurances, the ‘relevant capital sum’ means the sum assured, excluding in all cases any vested reversionary bonus: Insurance Companies (Determination of Long Term Liabilities) Regulation (Cap 41E) s 15(4).
