Any colonial law repugnant to the provisions of any Act of Parliament or subsidiary legislation under such Act extending to the colony should be void and inoperative: Colonial Laws Validity Act 1865 s 2. The colonial legislature could alter common law and equity: s 3. A colonial legislature could still make valid law though it failed to comply with the instructions given by or on behalf of the Queen: s 4; Pong Wai Ting v A-G [1925] 20 HKLR 2.
