A passage through the ground or through manufactured structures. A tunnel may be constructed by boring through the natural ground or by the cut and cover technique in which a trench is made and the top covered over and filled in. The term includes areas adjacent to the tunnel, such as approaches and abutments. A tunnel is a public place: Road Tunnels (Government) Ordinance (Cap 368) s 4. The Road Traffic Ordinance (Cap 374) shall apply to a tunnel as if a tunnel were a road within the meaning of that Ordinance: s 5. Commissioner for Transport shall determine the boundaries of a tunnel and the Director of Lands shall delineate the boundaries on a plan: s 6(1). A charge may be levied for the use of a tunnel: for example, Road Tunnels (Government) Ordinance (Cap 368). See also passage.
