单词 Prisoner of war
释义 戰俘
Abbr – POW. A member of an armed force captured by, or surrendered to, a belligerent power in time of war. To have the status of POW, the captured or surrendered person must belong to one of eight categories specified in the Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War 1949 art 4. Members of an organised resistance movement may be entitled to POW status as they fall within these categories. Civilians, as well as the medical and religious personnel of an armed force are not considered combatants and are not to be treated as prisoners of war but their liberty and rights respected. A POW is under the jurisdiction of the hostile government, not the capturing soldier or corp, and must be treated humanely. For example, a POW may not be exposed to brutality or degrading treatment by captors: Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War 1949 arts 13-14.
