In the law of evidence, the evidence of a witness may be regarded as a recent invention; that which is recanted by the witness at a later stage and is inconsistent with earlier statements: Fox v General Medical Council [1960] 3 All ER 225. Where it is alleged that a witness’s testimony is a recent invention, evidence of a prior consistent statement may be admitted to rebut that allegation: R v Wong Bing Fai (CACC 12/83, unreported).
