Law of nations |
The sum of the rules accepted by civilised states as determining their conduct towards each other. ‘Law of nations’ was formerly synonymous with international law. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, classical international law regarded states or nations as its sole subjects, and the law of nations as the body of law exclusively regulating the interrelations of states. Today non-state entities are also regarded as subjects of international law. The law of nations is not obligatory as there is no superior body in which to enforce its rules, though United Nations decisions have a persuasive force on Member States. Also known as ‘public international law’. See also Letter of safe conduct; Public international law. 另見 Letter of safe conduct; Public international law。 |
