The commencement of proceedings is prescribed by rules of court: The Rules of the High Court (Cap 4A); The Rules of the District Court (Cap 336H). Subject to the provisions of any written law and of The Rules of the High Court, civil proceedings in the Court of First Instance may be begun by writ, originating summons, originating motion or petition: The Rules of the High Court (Cap 4A) O5 r 1, but civil proceedings in the District Court may only be commenced by writ or originating summons: The Rules of the District Court (Cap 336H) O 5 r 1.
