单词 Relevant fact
A fact from which facts in issue may be inferred. Facts which may be relevant in the course of a judicial inquiry may conveniently be considered under five principal headings: (1) facts probative of a fact in issue; (2) facts showing identity or connection of parties; (3) facts showing states of mind; (4) similar facts; and (5) character. A fact so connected, directly or indirectly, with a fact in issue in an action or other proceeding, that evidence given in respect of it has a logical tendency to prove or disprove a fact in issue. A fact is relevant when, taken by itself or in connection with other facts, it renders the existence of a fact in issue more or less probable than it would otherwise be. A relevant fact therefore applies to the matter or fact in question. A relevant fact, although not in issue itself, is generally admissible as evidence (unless excluded by some rule) to assist the court in reaching a conclusion on the facts in issue. Also known as ‘evidential fact’.
