Learned friend |
A traditional way by which barristers engaged in advocacy refer to each other in court. The expression is used in place of the name of the barrister. It is sometimes used to refer to a solicitor advocate. However, a solicitor should not be referred to as ‘learned’ but ‘my friend’ and this convention is not intended to be offensive to solicitors but for the word ‘learned’ merely means ‘qualified as a barrister’: Wilkinson Advocacy and the Litigation Process in Hong Kong (2nd Ed, Butterworths, 1995) p 131. See also Advocacy. Wilkinson Advocacy and the Litigation Process in Hong Kong(第2版,Butterworths,1995年)第131頁。另見 Advocacy。 |
