In English common law, it is the period extending from the present time back to 1189. Legal memory is used for the establishment of those long-standing rights (such as easements by prescription) and for limitation of some real actions (this purpose is now obsolete). It was established by Statute of Westminster I 1275 (UK) in 1189 for the purpose of fixing a date for the term ‘time immemorial’. See also Prescription; Real action; Time immemorial.
