Equality of states |
An international legal principle recognising the juridical equality of all states. In international law, all states are equal in terms of their legal attributes (rights, duties, competence, and personality). A small state is accorded the same measure of sovereignty and independence as a larger, more powerful one. However, this does not imply that all states are equal in their territory, population, wealth, rank, voting power, and politico-economic influence. The principle of equality of states is recognised as one of the governing principles of the United Nations: Charter of the United Nations 1945 art 2(1). See also Statehood; United Nations. |
