At common law, a deed had to bear a seal but by statute a deed must be signed as well as sealed, or if expressed to be a deed, or to be sealed, need not be sealed in fact if it is signed: for example, The Hong Kong Christian Council Incorporation Ordinance (Cap 1083) s 8. 籍法規須蓋章而當作契據。在普通法，契據須附有蓋章，但根據法規，契據須予以簽署及蓋章，或如明訂為契據，則須蓋章，但如已簽署，則不須蓋章：例如《香港基督教協進會法團條例》（第1083章）第8條。
