In the former case, advertisements envisage the advertiser will enter into a unilateral contract: Esso Petroleum Co Ltd v Customs and Excise Cmrs [1976] 1 All ER 117, 1 WLR 1 (HL). An advertisement of a reward to be paid to any person who performs a certain act is an offer to the world at large, and can be accepted by anyone who performs that act. Advertisements which envisage that the advertiser will enter into bilateral contracts are more often found to be invitations to treat: Partridge v Crittenden [1968] 2 All ER 421, 1 WLR 1204.
