Family law - The father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, step-father, step-mother, son, daughter, grandson, grand-daughter, step-son, step-daughter, brother, sister, half-brother, half-sister, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, or cousin of a person. If the person was married, then another who is or was a relative of the kind described above, of the person’s spouse would also be a relative of the first person. In relation to an infant, grandparent, brother, sister, uncle or aunt, whether of the full blood, of the halfblood or by affinity and includes (a) where an adoption order is made, those who would be a relative if the child was born to the adopter under wedlock, and (b) where the child is illegitimate, the father and those who would be a relative if the child was the legitimate child of his parents: Adoption Ordinance (Cap 290) s 2. At common law a relative of a deceased has no cause of action where the death was caused by the tortious act of another. However, Fatal Accidents Ordinance (Cap 22) provided compensation to the dependants of a deceased for loss of dependency.
