In the law of charitable trusts, relief of the needs arising from old age. It is a charitable purpose, and a trust for this purpose is valid charitable trust. In order to be considered charitable the gift to the aged has to have as its purpose the ‘relief’ of a need attributable to the condition of the beneficiaries: Joseph Rowntree Memorial Trust Housing v Association Ltd & Anor [1983] Ch 159. The relief of the aged does not have to be relief for the aged poor: Joseph Rowntree Memorial Trust Housing Assn Ltd v A-G [1983] 1 All ER 288. A trust for the relief of aged persons would be charitable unless it was qualified in some way which would clearly render it not charitable: In re Glyn (dec’d) (1950) 66 TLR (Pt 2) 510.
