释义	加重 An increase in the gravity, severity, or seriousness of something. Criminal law - An increase in the seriousness of an offence. For example, a burglary may be aggravated by the possession of any firearm or imitation firearm, any weapon of offence, or any explosive at the time of burglary: Theft Ordinance (Cap 210) s 12. Aggravated offences commonly attract harsher penalties: Offences Against the Person Ordinance (Cap 212) s 17. An offence may be aggravated by factors such as the level of intent: Offences Against the Person Ordinance (Cap 212) ss 17, 22, 23, the age or status of the victim: Crimes Ordinance (Cap 200) ss 123-125. The aggravation of a disease includes an increase in the severity of the disease as the result of delaying medical treatment which would arrest the natural course of the disease: Lee v Minister of Pension (No 2) (1948) 3 WPAP 1901. Tort - An increase in the gravity of an injury suffered by a person as the result of mental distress brought about by the insulting and humiliating manner in which another has committed a tort. The court acknowledges aggravation in an award of increased general compensatory damages: Broome v Cassell & Co Ltd [1972] AC 1027, 2 All ER 849; Chow Hau Yung v Pang Chun Ying [1946-1972] HKC 322 (DC).
