A court established under the Coroners Ordinance (Cap 504) to perform the function to inquire the death of a person, with or without a jury, when a person dies suddenly, by accident, by violence, under suspicious circumstances or the dead body of is found in or brought into Hong Kong: Coroners Ordinance (Cap 504) s 14. Proceedings before a coroner’s court are largely inquisitorial. The objective is to investigate the cause of and the circumstances connected with the death. Coroners may make recommendation designed to prevent the recurrence of similar fatalities, for instance in cases of deaths in industrial accident, to prevent other hazards to life disclosed by evidence at the inquest and to bring deficiencies in a system or method of work to the attention of a person who may have the power to take appropriate action.
