释义	當值律師服務 Free legal services provided by the duty lawyers under the Duty Lawyer Scheme to the public where legal aid was not available. It is funded by the government. The Scheme, which is jointly managed and administered by the Hong Kong Law Society and the Hong Kong Bar Association, is now operated by the Duty Lawyer Service, which was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee in 1993. The scheme was expanded to offer representation to all defendants in the magistrate courts where the interested require it, and without payment of a defendant who lacks sufficient means to pay for representation. In fact, all applicants are subject to a means and merit test. Besides, a handling charge is payable by all adult defendants but the charge can be waived by the Administrator’s discretion in cases of genuine hardship. The Duty Lawyer Service is available for almost all offences in all magistrate courts.
